There’s something magical about capturing a moment in time… especially when that moment looks like sunshine, color, and tiny translucent slices of fruit suspended in glassy resin. This set of citrus coasters started, as many of my favorite projects do, with a simple thought:
“What if I could preserve summer?”
Not in a big, complicated way. Just in small, everyday moments - like setting down a cup of tea on something bright and joyful.
Working with resin is a bit like working with time.
You pour… and then you wait.
You adjust… then you trust.
For these coasters, I worked in layers:
a clear base pour
gentle placement of the dried citrus
tiny adjustments (because they will float if you let them 😉)
and then sealing everything in that glossy, glass-like finish with another layer of resin.
There’s a balance between control and letting go here. Resin teaches patience in the softest way.
Peeling the coasters out of their molds is always a tiny bit magical. Like pulling tape off of a finished watercolor piece. You never fully know what you’re going to get until that moment. When these came out…
Oh my.
They felt like little windows of sunlight.
Each one slightly different. Each one holding its own tiny composition.
That’s the beauty of handmade - nothing is ever too perfect, and that’s exactly what makes it special.
These coasters aren’t just functional. They’re:
a conversation starter
a pop of color on your table
a reminder that everyday objects can be art
And maybe most importantly…They’re proof that creativity doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful.
If you’re feeling inspired, here’s a gentle prompt for your next artist date:
“Preserve a moment.”
It could be:
dried flowers from a walk
scraps from a favorite paper collection
tiny found objects
or even colors that remind you of a season you love
Ask yourself:
What would I want to hold onto?
Then create something small and meaningful around that.
No pressure. Just play.
If you’re curious what these sunshine-filled coasters look like finished, you can peek at them in the etsy shop (still available as of this blog posting)
They truly make me smile every time I see them.
I’d love to know…
Would you enjoy a step-by-step tutorial showing exactly how I made these?
I’m thinking:
how to prep and pour resin (beginner-friendly)
how to keep everything in place
and all the little tips I’ve learned along the way
If that sounds like something you’d love, tell me!
